We left early in the morning for Mirosh on horse and wagon. Our new Halfling travelling companion’s cart was certainly as fine as the stories told. I didn’t want to be out in the sun and stayed inside with Navi. I napped to the dull sound of the wheels grinding along the road and click-clack of the horses’ hooves for a few hours.

I was rudely awakened by some yelling. Three ragtag young human males with crude weapons were making some sort of demands. I readied my rod from my window vantage to fire warning shots if the need arose. Renardo must’ve scared them off because they decided to turn tail and run. I was just pulling the curtain close when a battle cry erupted. Lady Luck’s fool was after them.

I quickly got out. Navi wasn’t in any hurry to follow. Almador and I exchanged bemused glances before he half-heartedly rode after them at a less than brisk pace. I followed behind in case anyone needed any healing. As I entered the forest, I turned back to see Navi say something to Demyan that caused him to laugh.

By the time I caught up with everyone, Renardo had taken a rather severe beating by those would-be bandits before taking two down and letting the other one escape. He bitched about how to treat bandits and how nobility/lords act all the way back to the wagon. By the time we arrived at Miroshalla, I was glad to escape all the chatter.

I went to the local temple to donate some of my earning to the poor. I spent some time with some of the sick and elderly to ensure their needs were provided. There was even a dwarf in town! He was employed by the Bank of Mirosh and was delighted to see someone of his race. It had been months since he had a chance to speak his native tongue.

We didn’t stay for too long before continuing our journey north. A wide river loomed ahead. There were some humans nearby, probably there to rob travelers, help them across, or both. Demyan had a few words with them and we were given assistance. There was nothing else of note for the rest of the ride to Mirosh.

The guards spoke with Demyan at the gate. I had no idea what they were saying, but the guard’s expression went from cautious to content to very suspicious over the course of the interrogation. In the end, we were angrily waved in with Renardo paying 30 silvers on our behalf.

Almador wanted to immediately head to The Star Inn to seek his shipmates. Before that, we had to park Demyan’s wagon. The halfling stables were in a rather filthy ghetto. A young one made the mistake of putting a hand into our Neheshi’s pockets. He won’t be doing that again anytime soon. She grabbed his wrist and singed it lightly with some acid. He let out a cry and ran off empty-handed.

Navi, Renardo, and I left for the teleportation offices while Demyan accompanied Almador to the inn. The application process was full of tedious, but necessary paperwork. We sent Renardo back to the inn. The rest of our time was spent interviewing with various administrators.

We arrived at the inn early evening. Almador had rented a suite for us. Renardo was having a crying fit of some sort having been informed that his horse died. Now that we were all assembled in private, Almador informed us that he received a message when he made our sleeping arrangements. The sea witch from his ship left him a magical missive letting him know when she took her dinner at the inn.

All of us went down to the common room an hour before her dinner time to keep watch. Demyan ate by himself at the bar while we had our own table. Bread, meats, and soup were brought, covered by what we paid for the suite. Navi reached into her robes and pulled out a dagger to cut the bread. Renardo recognized it as the dagger he’d been missing for hours. She returned it with a sly smile. If I didn’t know better, she probably stole it to cut his heart out if he came with reach in the middle of the night.

Almador come down at the designated time. He spotted his companion’s table. The exchanged greetings and waited for a third. Lahack, the ship’s cook arrived. More greetings were exchanged before their meal. Almador later informed us that she, Salandara, had found a fey passage far to the northeast that led to the Feydark, but that would probably be too dangerous. She was impressed with Almador’s ability to stay alive, manage to find a fey passage, secure a writ of passage from the eladrin on the other side, slay some dragons. No decision was to be made until their final companion would arrive. When she was satisfied, our friend came over and asked us to meet his shipmates.

It was obvious Salandara was in charge. The half-elven cook was clearly afraid of her and bowed before her words. She made a comment to Navi about having “titan blood”. Interesting. I’m not sure what that means… yet. After a brief conversation, she had no further use of us.

The Loss of a Claw

Winter is a hard time in any land. This world, despite its seemingly tame nature, can yet be very dangerous and take a life when it will.

The area around the Tower is a harsh land of frigid swamp. This would prove to make taming it and the area around the local town of Hofstrens more difficult. Winter had in fact ended, the wheel turning toward a warmer season, when I first discovered a few trolls living near by. The first two were no trouble with the help of Onundr and Navi, to dispatch. But there was evidence of a few more that needed to be cleared out. We returned to the tower to gather the remaining Claws and set out to finally tame the area.

It did not take long for us to find them, they did not attempt to hide their presence. We found a small clearing and lit a fire to attract them to us. Before we knew it, there were six trolls surrounding us. They proved to be much tougher foes than anticipated. The battle continued for some time and the wore us down. Slowly we reduced their number, but trolls are troublesome creatures if you do not take them down properly. A few managed to rise again to continue to wear us down. Our clearing became difficult to maneuver in as one of the trolls used a broken staff to command vines and brier to sprout from the ground, entangling and tearing at our legs. It seems like forever that I was entangled and unable to move, too far to engage the trolls, but not far enough to be out of their reach.

By the time that I was able to break free, I had become so enraged that I blindly went after this troll caster. It this point he was the only troll left standing, and though he was able to know me down and unconscious for a moment, my rage was fuel to revive me and bring me back into the fight. The last of the trolls was finally taken down, but it was too late. My dear comrade Ansis had been subdued by the vines.

There was nothing that we could do to revive him. He was lost. What happened next was something that I have never seen before. It was as if the ground began to pull him in. He began to fade and dissolve away. All the remained was his armor. We collected ourselves and returned to the tower.

Onundr informed us that he had many chances to speak to Ansis on the afterlife. It was Ansis’ wish to not be brought back. In time he would return via what would be normal means for his kind. Maybe we will meet him again in some new form. It is unknown if he will know us or if we will know him if we meet again.

We all decided that his deeds with us needed to be celebrated in town. We loaded up the cart with our cask of Elvin Wine and made way to Hofstrens. We made our way to the inn and gave news of the fall of our friend. The whole town mourned and celebrated with us. IT was a long and intoxicating night where libations, tears, tales, and laughter flowed freely. Ansis will be remembered.

While in town, we had an unexpected introduction to a halfling that has taken quite a bit of interest in us. It is strange to see his kind traveling alone. He has a fine wagon that would suit us well for traveling to Mirosh. We have struck a bargain with him to travel there where we play the part of body guard in exchange for transport.

We set out tomorrow. I look forward to seeing my shipmates and returning to the Feywilds. Returning home.

Master Of The Tower
The dream ends.

Our battle with the undead was draining. There was no way we could continue without an extended rest. We examined the far side of the pit and determined that door at the far end had not been opened for a long time. The foes we just defeated must’ve been the person in search of the secrets of this tower and her sellswords. I wonder what could have turned them into what they became. Would we have met the same fate had we perished by their hands?

These trouble thought plagued my imagination as I drifted into deep slumber. When I opened my eyes, everything around me was cast by a soft candlelight. Four robed figures stood nearby. One of the four was leading the others in some sort of ritual. We (I’m not even sure who… it was dark…) lunged forward and kill one of the aides. A short battle ensued. I turned over one of the bodies and reached for the amulet. His human hand reached up and he disappeared. I awoke as we fled.

Judging by the near simultaneous gasp of my companions and Alamador jumping to his feat ready to strike an invisible enemy, we all had a bad dream. It took a bit of prodding to get Nadja to admit she also saw what we saw, but we all agreed on the basics. Alamador was on watch so whatever we saw was only in our minds. The circle around the ritualists feet seemed like a teleportation circle. I described it and Almador was certain of it.

We gathered our gear and prepared for what might lie beyond the door. There didn’t appear to be any traps. Ansis unlocked the door. A set of stair descended deeper into the earth. The stairs led to a small room with some siphons and basins at one end. Another staircase went further below. We continued to a large laboratory of some sort.

As soon as we entered, an animated suit of armor attacked. The room had four arena pillars in the middle. Large energy fluctuations emanated from them. The rest of the group engaged this soulless foe while Ansis and I rushed over to examine the columns. A series of runes were inscribed on the stone. We were able to disable the magic and defeat the armor.

Once again, we were exhausted and had to rest to catch our breath before examining the room. There was a pool of liquid, which was slightly denser than water. It smelled like burnt rubber. There was some sort of snake construct. I spent a lot of time studying the pillars and table. The back two did nothing while the front two definitely imbued qualities into constructs and creation. The would explain the armor and our inability to defeat it until the pillars stopped working their magic. This also led me to unpleasant thoughts of this human wizard possibly creating Warforged.

A hallway was the only other exit to this room. We could not find any hidden portals of any sort. Gal dipped the snake in the pool of water and threw it down the hall. Nothing. It was the only place we could go and seemed perfect for a trap. Almador fey stepped to the door at the end of the hall while we waited at the other end.

A loud bang told us we were right in thinking there was a trap. Our Eladrin friend took some damage, but nothing he couldn’t brush off. We joined Almador. Ansis checked for more traps and didn’t find any. He opened the door where a bright light source lit up the hall. A male figure stepped into a large circle in the middle of the room and say over and over “This should not be” in Neheshi.

Like in our shared dream, we rushed forward and the ghostly figure did the same. We were victorious in our skirmish against the spirit. The light dimmed as we could clearly see the symbols on the floor matched what our minds knew. Also apparent were four corpses on the ground.

Inside The Tower
There's a wight way and a wrong way.

A quick search of the Bullywug’s “camp” yielded some coins and some black dragon bile. We trashed whatever they had and cleaned up the area a little bit.

Now that there were no more immediate threats, we could see the tower stood 60 feet tall. Rumor had it that a Neheshi mage built it near the end of the Light Bringer Conflict. Who knows why it might be haunted now. The more I looked at the tower, the more it seemed like something was a little off. There seemed to be a persistent magical effect on it. We need to be careful. Who knows what traps may be waiting for us.

The tower door was not locked. Almador pushed it open and sent our magical lamp in to illuminate the inside. It appeared empty. We stepped inside and were greeted by the remnants of a battle.

Statues had been toppled on the floor. Splintered wood and rubbish were in no short supply. Collapsed tents were in a corner near some broken vials. Nadja identified pilse of feces under the stairs. She claimed they were probably human and several weeks old. A large tapestry hung on a wall with many rips. It depicted a floating tower with an army marching out. It was obviously Neheshi. The most prominent figure was a male wizard with a thin beard and blue eyes. Could he be the owner of this tower?

I went over to examine the fallen statues. To my surprise, the smaller ones were Warforged! What are they doing all the way out here? This tower just became significantly more interesting. My friends found some winter clothes and a deck of cards amongst the tents. Gal recognize them as a style of out production by 30-40 years. They featured suits with angels, archons, demons, and devils. We bagged everything that might be of value.

Someone discovered a ladder behind the tapestry. The room below was a storeroom and/or winecellar. It had been stripped of everything useful. The only thing left was stale water and spoiled wine. I’d have to be half dead to drink the stuff. There didn’t appear to be any hidden doors or levers. We ascended back to the main room.

Our other options of exploration were the hole in the middle and the stairs leading up. Almador went down the hole and reported a passageway. We decided to check out the upstairs first. Once we was out of the hole, we closed the trapdoor and put one of the heavy bodies of the Warforged over it in case something from below wanted to sneak up on us. I felt really bad using a body like that, but there were no other suitable objects.

Old dried blood was all over the second floor near the stairs. There were many bookcases, an armoire, a large table, nice chair, and many arcane implements. A fire had long destroyed most of the tomes. A ruined suit of full plate was strewn near the table. Gal pulled aside the curtains to one of the windows. To our surprise, there was nothing there. Sure, there was a window, but we should have seen the sky beyond it. It was inky blackness. Gal grabbed a charred book and shoved it through the window. It came back in.

From some of the dozen or so books we managed to salvage, the library must have been an impressive arcanography. A pity that so much is gone. I read the documents on the table. They were correspondence in Gnomish about teleportation and time zones. Other books (written in several language) were on arms and weaponsmithing, gemology, naturalist text, Tochlandic geneology, and most interesting… a book titled Art of Steel Abjuration. The last tome deals in golem creation. I also discovered a journal.

The journal talked about a trapdoor, probably the same one we blocked. Judging by the date, this person was here nine months ago. I shall faithfully include the readable contents of the journal here.

While I carefully read the journal, Almador slipped into the armoire. He closed the door behind him and hit the back wall. I don’t know if this is a common thing from where he’s from, but the panel opened into a bedroom that shouldn’t be there. Gal opened the door from our end, but Almador wasn’t there. Almador tried to reopen the door on his end, but to no avail. Our Tiefling friend jumped into the armoire after him and closed the door.

With the two of them on the other side, they took stock of the room. There was a bed and a stone altar. Statues of Bepharus, God of Knowledge, adorned the place of worship. They came back through the armoire to report their findings. The two of them and Ansis went back to the bedroom, which was probably above us, to see if there was anything useful. Nadja and I stayed behind to continue our reading and research.

The only object of real interest to them was a chest at the foot of the bed. It was empty until Almador spied a false bottom. Inside was some residuum. They looked at the offerings on the altar. They were all writings about divine insight and confirmation of theory. A cabinet at the other end of the room contained nothing. An eerie voice whispered, “never leave.” They all heard it.

Spooked, they rushed back through the armoire to where we were. It was time to go. We hastily ran down the stairs to the front door. It wouldn’t budge. We were stuck. We couldn’t escape out the windows as we’d be thrown back in. That left one option – the trapdoor the previous party went through. We move the Warforged, opened the trapdoor, and followed in their footsteps.

There was no light. Almador commanded our magic lamp to illuminate the passage. It was a good as we were able to see the large pit of spikes ahead of us. Corpses were impaled at the bottom, most likely from the party that preceded us. Nadja jumped over the pit. A second after she landed, apparitions appeared on the other side and the corpses in the pit became animated.

The battle was fierce. The wright backed Nadja and the other front liners against the pit while the skeletons wreaked havoc climbing out of the spikes. In the end we were victorious and completely spent. We collapsed in a heap on the other side of the pit near a locked door and looted our enemies.

Building Local Rep
Several paths begin to open up before us. We choose a swamp.

Our first stop in town to the church of Atrian. We quickly relayed our findings Thayon, who was quite pleased with our performance. He took us to the first citizen Ibros and we informed him of what we found. His was quite gracious.

The first citizen hastily called a town meeting to publicly acknowledge our deeds and the end of the goblin threat in this region. Of course he made no mention of the crystal or taints as that would have frightened many of the townsfolk.

After the informal ceremony, the party scattered to do our own things for the remainder of the day. I spent a great deal of time talking to Thayon about religion and Olophanes. He’s clearly afraid of something, but is trying to hide his concerns as best he can. My comrades heard some interesting rumors around town. There seems to be a nixie in the woods not too far from here. A Neheshi wizard built a tower in some forsaken swamp and abandoned it. Not it’s supposedly haunted. Then there’s some rumor about halflings stealing human children. Don’t these humans know

better? Apparently not.

A messenger came to us mid-afternoon to present us with an invitation for dinner at Fisichaeus’ home. Our local deeds impressed him enough for him to want to dine with us. It seemed like a good opportunity for us so we accepted.

His home was without a doubt the nicest in this fine village. He was polite, charismatic, and shrwed. The merchant was measuring us and trying to decide if we were friends or foes. He liked having the attention of the village with his goods and services. Depending on our actions, we could really help or hinder his operation. My friends didn’t seem to pick up on this and seemed content to have some polite company and good food. By the time we left for our beds, things had gone smoothly and I played it cool to subtly convey that we were not looking to be his enemy.

The following morning, we packed up our things to leave. Thayon offered to sell us some healing potions at a discount. It was a generous offer we didn’t refuse. I also sought out the poor half-orc and gave him some silvers as acknowledgement of the hard work he has done for these kind folks

which has mostly gone unappreciated.

Out chosen quest was to investigate the tower in the swamp. Great… the last time I crossed a swamp, there were stinky rotting undead Neheshis working to drain it. Disgusting I tell you. Anyway, we took our two hours and made our way to the swamp. Almador secured the two horses before we

entered.

Thankfully, the swamp was not very deep, but it still came up much higher than I would have liked. After trudging through the stale water for what seemed like a good portion of the day, we found a tower. A few scattered tents were on the dryer parts of the land. As we approached, foul frog-like creatures, Bullywugs, attacked us. We crushed their impotent attacks and chased down the fleeing vermin to prevent reinforcements.

Dearest Percivaldo,

Well old man, the North remains reliable: it never fails me in coldness, dampness, and bland food. Still, the place begins to grow on me. Of late my company has ranged farther south, coming within sight of the vast caldera lake the Tochlanders call “The Chalice.” The land here is wild and uncivilized.

I found Tochland worse than I’d expected. Phaidros is still a civilized land, but in Tochland, the forests run right to the edge of the highways. A man could get lost forever by stepping ten meters off the road, and the smallfolk tell their children horrid stories of the things lurking in the woods to keep them from straying. They are right to do so; the goblins we found in Phaidros are a nuisance compared to some of what lurks in the great tracts of woodland abutting the highways. The trees are young; one can see that much of this land is tilth taken back by the forests. The fortunes of war have been most unkind to this land.

When we came into the south, the trees thinned out, but the land becomes very boggy. We’re lucky to be traveling late in the year; I’m told that the gnats and black flies are awful in some seasons. The people in this part of Tochland speak a dialect as squishy as their muddy lands. Rivers and streams crisscross everywhere. One could grow rice very well here if the crop were imported, but they’ve never heard of it up here. Instead, they build dykes and windmills everywhere to create drier ground for wheat, oats, and barley. The windmills are a trick they imported from the gnomes, I’m told.

We traveled south to a market town near the “Chalice,” where we’d heard a dwarf of the Blackrock Clan was hiring adventurers. Looked like an easy enough job — clearing some orcs from a mine they’d encroached upon. Not so, old man, not so. I wouldn’t have credited this myself, had I not seen it, but it seems that in the deepest places of the earth dwell degenerate cousins of the dwarves, called Duergar. Though they looked like dwarves to me (and I made the mistake of saying as much), my companion Onundr was offended at the suggestion there was any relation. To be sure their behavior was not in keeping with what I’ve seen in the past from the stout folk. They’d captured a dwarf, one Sif, come earlier to oust them, and tortured the lass something horrible. In the end, though, we cleared ‘em out. I’ll not bore you with the details of our escape after that — a good deal of digging and climbing was involved. Cave in, you know. I’d rather drown at sea.

One challenge did remain, though, and here I refer you to the small lump of metal enclosed. It’s a shard from an Adamantine Dragon’s scale, old man! Have an alchemist test it if you don’t believe me, and next time my younger brother gives you sass, tell him he can have my place over my dragon-slaying sword arm. It was just a small one, mind you — I’ll not inflate the tail. But a dragon is a dragon, eh? Its flesh was the best meal I’ve had since coming north.

Well old man, back to the road I think. Who knows where we’ll end next.

Lost in the Dark
Dark Mines

Our descent began on an elevator after we cleared out a half dozen or so orcs on the surface. We came to this place on the behest of Wolfson , a dwarf from the Blackrock Clan. He sent out a party to clear out these mines, which included a cousin of his. The mines are to be put back into production once any infestation has been removed. That party never returned. It was believed that they were captured and are being held in mines by the orcs. We were hired to finish the job and rescue the kidnapped dwarves.

As we descended, control over the elevator was take from the orcs below. Volleys of poisonous arrows showered upon us. Many of us were hit. The poison was quick, but not long lasting. Nonetheless, we were weakened by it, and when we landed, we were greeted but another half dozen orcs and some other type creature. On the way down we managed to return fire and weaken them as well. This other creature was some sort of spell caster, a priest perhaps to some heathen god. It remained protected behind a wall of stalagmites. After my companions and I took care of a few of the orcs, I stepped through the wall to engage the priest. After the battle Önundr Tyggrason explained that it was something called a Duergar. A distant and forsaken relative to the dwarves. His disgust from just speaking the name of this race was enough to know to never mention them to him again. Unfortunately, the priest was not alone, two more duergar appeared on either side of me from out of the thin air. I was surrounded, a situation I have become very familiar with, and nothing that I could not handle. As my allies made their way through the stalagmites to aid me, the priest attempted to run. Our presence in the mine had to be kept secret, so I perused. I was able to catch up and slow the priest down. Together, we were able to stop the priest in his tracks.

After the battle, we took a short rest and discussed which direction to proceed in the mine. In the end, we decided to continue down the shaft where the priest was attempting to flee. It was not long before we were halted by a flurry of arrows coming out of the darkness ahead. We approached cautiously and found another group in a portion of the mine that opened up. It was another mixed group of duergar and orcs. We seem to have surprised a group what was mining in the area as a few of them were only wielding picks. A later search of the area relieved a collection of silver ore that had been mined. A short battle ensued, and one of the miners was able to escape. This was of great concern to us as we did not know how many more might be lower on the mine, and this miner would surely alert them. We did not delay here long and continued deeper into the mine.

Eventually the mine opened up into a large cavern. The decent down the side of the cavern was extremely treacherous, as the miner who escaped found out. The miner must have fallen in his haste and met his end. Something the fluttered into the darkness had been feeding on the miner, a gruesome site to witness in a place so dank and dark as this. As we continued down the narrow path, we used our rope to tether ourselves together. It was fortuitous that we did as one of my companions, I believe the human from the south with the obnoxious accent, slipped and fell into the rushing waters. Had it not been for the rope, the situation may have been dire.

As we reached the bottom of the cavern, Önundr pointed out a fortification at the other end. We were able to make out a lone orc guarding the entrance, asleep. Before anyone could do anything about it, Renardo snuck up to the orc in an attempt to assassinate it silently. He was nearly successful, but failed to complete the job. At that moment, Önundr let forth a blast of light the finished off the orc, but illuminated the entire cavern. Everyone froze, waiting to see what might happen. After a few minutes, the tension subsided, for now, it appeared that we remained undiscovered. The door to the fortification was open and lead to a hall designed to make make anyone who traveled down it dead. We could hear light coughing coming from one of the slits on the right side designed for archers. Renardo snuck in first, opened the door at the end of the hall with the key we found on the guard. He then entered the room where we could hear coughing. In there he discovered a dwarf hanging in cage, otherwise he was alone. At this point we all joined him in the room. Ansis was able to successfully pick the lock, but triggered a trap and was injured. We al then took a much closer look around and discovered a second trap rigged with a trip wire at the entrance of the cage. Careful to not trigger it, we entered a released the prisoner. She was a dwarf warrior maiden know as Sif Blackrock, The Shade Stone. We told her how things had gone for us up until this point and gave her an account of each enemy we had slain. She informed us that all her companions had been killed and she would surely be dead soon if it were not for our arrival. She also spoke of at least 2 more duergar, one of which was a forge priest and her torturer, that still remains somewhere nearby in the fortress. After locating her equipment and giving her time to rest, she was extremely eager to search the rest of the fortress for her captors and bring swift justice to them. We agreed to help her as it would also complete out purpose here.

The first duergar we encountered gave us no trouble as we caught it off guard in what looked like the barracks. It died a disgraceful death with its pants around its ankles. I doubt that either of my dwarven companions felt that it deserved anything better. We continued to search the fortress and found a tightly wound spiral staircase leading down. We descended and discovered a short hallway with doors on each side and another orc guard. This one was no asleep and engaged us immediately. The doors at the end of the hall were the larges and were barred. They remained that way for the rest of the battle. The doors on either side of the hallway each lead into a larger room. The single door lead to what, from my companions description, appeared to be a forge. The double door lead to a hall and makeshift throne-room, at the entrance was standing another guard. I entered this room to help elevate the choke-point in which we were stuck. The room was pitch dark, so I illuminated the room with our lantern. At this point I noticed three other creatures. One was wielding a hammer, the other a mace, and the third appeared to be a dog crafted out of a mess of wire and metal. As the battle continued, most of the rest of my party entered this room. Only Önundr remained in the hallway, pinned down by what I hear was a whirlwind of knives. Eventually, what i recognize from the description given to us by Sif, the forge priest entered the room. The outer wall of the room was not a wall at all, but open to another cavern, which after a lower walkway lead to a sheer drop into nothingness. During the battle, both Ansis and Renardo were knocked out of the room down to this lower walkway.

After the forge priest entered the room, Renardo climbed back up from the outer walkway to engage the priest. The priest said something in some awful language and threw something at the floor. All around the priest and Renardo 4 fire spirits appeared. It was at this point that everything got much worse. I do not recall who made the blow, but when one of these fire spirits was stuck, they exploded into a ball of sparks and flame. The sparks flew over the edge of the wall and ignited something on the lower walkway. Three were a series of defining explosions that rocked the foundation of the fortress. The lower walkway began to fall and half the room and the hallway outside the door followed it. I was standing next the the throne when the room and my companions were beginning to slide into the murky darkness below. I immediately threw a rope to me friends and began to look for something to secure it to. It was at this point that the remainder of the room in which I was standing began to fall as well. While keeping hold of the rope I was able to leap to the corner of the room , which was not much more than an small ledge at this point, that was not falling. I took a tight hold of the rope and braced myself for what I knew would be too much for me to hold. the slack in the rope was quickly taken up and with a overwhelming tug I was pulled off the ledge and began to follow my companions into the dark depths below.

Much to my surprise and extreme pain, the chasm had a bottom. I, only through the grace of Shalonwe, remained conscious, though only barely. Sif also survived the fall without loosing consciousness, and together we began digging through the rubble to unearth out friends.

We all managed to survive; but we have been down here, forced to take rest by our injuries, for two days. This place is not meant for living things. We must find our way out of here. I must see the stars again above my head and the green of the earth below my feet. All my hope for this lies in my two dwarven companions.

Dispelling a different taint.

I ran my short legs into the woods as fast as I could, following my comrades. When it seemed they stopped giving chase, we collapsed at the closest defensible location. I had never run so hard. I drank some water, but that didn’t help. I needed to take a sip of something strongly. I passed my wineskin around though I’m not sure they deserved it after that botched plan. I closed my eyes and rested as long as I could. I was so out of it I didn’t remember that I have a hand ritual that would help conceal our presence. Glad nothing attacked us.

Almador led the way back. I had no idea where we were. Had it been running through dark cave I could have taken us anywhere, but I’m as blind a newborn rabbit in this land of trees.

The goblins we slew outside the cave were gone. Many tracks led into the cave. They probably dragged their dead inside for food. Nadja suggested going around to find a back entrance. It was a rare occasion that I agreed with her. The search yielding nothing. It was back to our usual plan.

We spotted 2 sentries stations outside of the cave entrance. I wasted no time and blasted one of them without hesitation. Both of them were killed before they could sound the alarm. In this case, the alarm would’ve been a horn. We took the opportunity to take a quick rest atop the cave mouth.

Alamdor climbed down and took position in front of the cave entrance several paces back. Nadja and Gal were off to the side while Ansis and I stay on top to rain death when the time came. Almador blew the horn, but instead of Goblins charging out, a cloud obscured the cave mouth.

Taints came up from the ground beneath our feet, foiling our plan to fire spells from above. I had to make a pretty far jump to the ground below. I fell on my ass hard, but managed to crawl away. The battle around me was a mess. The cloud made it difficult to see our targets. Some caster was effectively moving it around. We managed to kill the Goblins and Taints one-by-one, gaining ground into the cave.

They punished us for every inch. The fight went into a large chamber. There didn’t appear to be any escape routes. The last Goblin took its final stand over their shit pit. Guess it showed its intellect. We made sure to kill it without having to soil our clothes to rob its corpse.

Victory meant spoils. There were a number of items worth selling. The only thing of use was some cloth armor, which Nadja took. She claimed she didn’t want it, but I’m on to her. She’ll take everything she can get her greedy hands on.

While gathering the loot, I noticed something amiss about the a section of stonework near the shit pit. It was so obvious I didn’t need to see it. I could feel something was wrong off with that wall. Judging by its surroundings, the inhabitants had no idea something laid behind the stone. Ansis and Almador checked for traps. A nasty one was in place. We felt it was safe to fully rest up before attempting to see what was on the other side.

When we were ready, Ansis used his skills to disarm the trapped door. A few of us helped him out with the task. It was a good thing too. He made a miscalculation that triggered the trap. I nearly lost some fingers before he corrected his mistake and rendered the door harmless.

A second check showed no more devices of death. The heavy door swung open much protest. A hallway laid beyond the door, curving to the right. Our approach was cautious. There was no telling where the passage led or what we might find.

The hall around the corner led to an open room with a magnificent crystal in the middle. It lit the cavern. Stalagmites and stalactites cast shadows all around. A creature materialized above the crystal. We later figured out it was a Void Dweller. In the meantime, there was a battle to be fought. It summoned more taint-like creatures.

We weren’t prepared for this type of fight as our focus had been Goblins. We tried to determine if the Void Dweller was using the crystal to summon its minions, but that didn’t seem to be the case; therefore, we concentrated our efforts on our main enemy. Several of my companions went down like a sack of tubers. There were barely enough potions and words to go around to keep everyone alive. Depleted and with few options, we coordinated a final assault in desperation. Luck was on our side this day as we stole victory from the jaws of defeat.

The crystal was a fascinating subject. I spent some time studying it with Almador and Nadja. The Void Dweller was using it to control the weak-willed Goblin tribe. It sent them to Olophanes’ house to retrieve information and possibly torch the home. I wonder what it wanted and who it served… Something important is happening. Summoning planar beings is often asking for a death wish; having those beings come and mess with things here is even worse.

We left the crystal and carnage in the room. With the secret door closed and secured, it was time to head back. A quick stop at the old man’s house yielded nothing further from the basement. The next stop was Hastrons to report our findings to Thayon.

What happened next was so mind-boggling, I blocked most of it from memory.

It must’ve been the poor choice of where to put the horse before the last battle and made everyone paranoid and unreasonable. There was much arguing about whether to dig out the basement, go track down the Goblin lair, go back to Hastrons, or Hrumnir knows what!

They really pissed me off and at some point I stomped off to the remains of the tower to try to find comfort near blessed stone.

I vaguely remember one of them having the nerve to ask for another divination. Hrrrummmppph.

I think we ended up at their mudhole because of it. We did what we always do, charge in with barely a plan (or an over complicated plan that doesn’t work). We killed some Goblins, but mostly had our asses handed back to us with sharp sticks. We exited the cave at full speed into the forest to recover.

Did I mention we didn’t check out the lab under the house?!

Apparently we weren’t concerned about a horde goblins returning as we perused the books the Goblins salvaged. There were books of star charts and 3 scrolls on comets and meteors. Others were on myths, specifically creation myths, that included insightful comparative studies on them.

Most interesting to me were the books written in Neheshi. Seemed odd that so many books in Neheshi were this deep inside Phaedros. These focused on celestial movements with planar conjunctions. Seemed the old man was hellbent on contacting extra-planar entities. Looks like he got his wish.

We tossed all the book into our magic sack. Someone retrieved the horse and cart and tied her up in the house. This seemed like a bad idea, but what else is new. If we left the horse by the path, it might get killed. If we put in the remains of the house, it might get killed.

While they took care of that, I sat down and prayed to Hrumnir for guidance. Our options seem to be stay and fight, remove the rest of the rubble to the trapdoor, or study the book. I was told staying and fighting would give us the greatest reward. I conveyed my divination and we prepared for the Goblin forces to return.

It didn’t take long for them to approach our location. Almador’s sharp elven eyes saw something in the bushes. Nadja strode forth to intimidate whatever was out there. It howled, possibly for reinforcements. Finally, someone realized the goblins might kill the horse if stays in the house. Nadja and I took the horse and brought it to the beginning of the trail. That was a terrible idea too!

Goblins had been surrounding the area and attacked us when we were near. The horse panicked, but we didn’t have too much time to worry about it. We were outnumbered and the runts were prepared. From the other side of the house came Goblins riding Dire Wolves.

It took nearly a minute for us to get control of the situation. Once the wolves and their riders were slain, the remaining vermin fled. We couldn’t let them go back and warn their clan. A short chase into the forest ensured they would not draw breath again.
